The Lone Star Conference is one of the premier NCAA DII football conferences and Angelo State is picked to win the conference for the second year in a row after their undefeated season in 2024.

Could Central Washington, UT Permian Basin or Texas A&M Kingsville take down the Rams in 2025? See which teams could make an impressive run, or establish themselves as a perennial power.

The conference is full of talent and strong teams, some that are ranked in the D2 Preseason Rankings.

LSC Players To Watch

Kanon Gibson

After transferring from West Texas A&M to UT Permian Basin, Gibson earned the starting job and is looking to take the new-look Falcons to new heights in 2025. As a Buff, Gibson threw for 1,234 yards and 12 touchdowns while rushing for an additional 274 yards and four touchdowns. Gibson was named the starter by head coach Kris McCullough on Monday, Aug 25.

Braeden Fuller

Named the 2025 Lone Star Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, Fuller led Angelo State to the Lone Star Championship in 2024 and is looking to do it again in 2025. As a sophomore, he threw for 2,318 yards and 21 touchdowns and ran for 678 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was named the J.W. Rollins Award winner, the trophy given to the Lone Star Conference’s offensive player of the year. After a monster sophomore season, there’s nothing stopping him from leading Angelo State to another undefeated conference season and an NCAA D2 Playoffs appearance.

Tristan Exline

Another UTPB Falcon, Exline was named the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and is set to have an even bigger senior season after leading the team with 104 tackles including 16 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks.

Deuce Zimmerman

A native of Anchorage, Alaska, the Western New Mexico wide receiver led the team with 39 catches for 570 yards and seven touchdowns. Now a senior, Zimmerman is set to have an even bigger season and was named a Lone Star Preseason Offensive Player to Watch. He’s looking to help the Mustangs win conference games and get out of the ninth place spot they were picked to finish at in 2025.

Lone Star Football Teams To Watch

UTPB

A new-look team that features an electric quarterback, the UT Permian Basin Falcons are looking to have a big season in 2025 and challenge Angelo State for the Lone Star Conference title. Picked to finish third in the preseason poll, the Falcons last won the conference in 2023.

Texas A&M Kingsville

Though they are not playing in Week 0, the Javelinas are another team that could shake up the Lone Star standings in 2025. With a new head coach from Division-I FBS Louisiana Tech who brought his quarterback and offensive coordinator, Texas A&M Kingsville is looking to shake things up in 2025.

Sul Ross State

In their second season as a Division 2 School, the Sul Ross State Lobos are finding their footing, and though they were picked to finish last in Lone Star Conference, they have nothing to lose. The Lobos won three games last season and could very well beat that number as they now know what it takes to win.
