For more than 130 years, the football program at George Fox University has been started, stopped and revived, even returning briefly with a six-man version in the 1940s.

The longest hiatus for the program lasted 45 years, beginning after a winless 1969 campaign.

The modern iteration of the team played its first game in 2014 as part of an expansion of George Fox athletics that came with hefty financial support and a new stadium.

Though the squad has yet to have a breakthrough season, there have been flashes of potential and a couple of standout years within the Northwest Conference.

When the Bruins take the field for their 2025 season, it will be under the guidance of a new head coach, a change that comes after 11 seasons with the man who breathed life back into the program.

In February 2012, before the completion of the Stoffer Family Stadium in which the team would be playing its home games, Chris Casey was announced as the coach who would lead the latest revival of the program.

Casey was familiar with NCAA Division III football and the NWC, in particular, as he’d collected playing and coaching experience at Linfield and Whitworth, two of the conference’s perennial powerhouses.

During his 11 seasons with the Bruins, Casey compiled a 51-48 record. The team was ranked as high as 19th in the nation in 2017 and had a best performance of eight wins in 2022. 

Casey announced his retirement in January 2025, wrapping up more than four decades as a football coach. He handed the reigns to Spencer Crace, who previously was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Pacific Lutheran, another NWC team.

The newest era in Bruins football will get underway on the road Sept. 6 against Redlands. The first official Northwest Conference game for Crace and his squad will be at home Oct. 4 against Linfield, the reigning NWC champion.

The first round of the 2025 NCAA Division III Playoffs will be Nov. 22.

The 2025 Division III Football Championship title game will be played Jan. 10, 2026, at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.
