The Lewis & Clark football team will enter the 2025 season with a new head coach, and he certainly has the knowledge and experience to turn the Pioneers into contenders.

Brett Elliott actually is a bit of a Northwest Conference legend, having played two standout seasons at Linfield University, where he was the 2005 National Player of the Year.

Elliott, who played professionally from 2006-2011, also spent time on the Linfield coaching staff, including a six-year stint as the Wildcats’ offensive coordinator before making the lateral move to Lewis & Clark.

Last season, Elliott helped Linfield to the NWC title and into the third round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs.

The Lewis & Clark team previously was led by Joe Bushman, who left the position in January to pursue another opportunity. Two weeks later, Elliott was introduced as the new man in charge.

In three seasons with the Pioneers, Bushman was 14-15 overall and 10-11 in conference games.

Bushman’s time at Lewis & Clark actually was the most successful few years the team has had since a rebuild in 2006.

Since that season, the Pioneers have gone 0-9 five times and won three or less games 11 times.

For almost three decades, Linfield has been a dominant force in the Northwest Conference, and the Wildcats enjoyed a run of nine consecutive conference titles from 2009-2017.

Lewis & Clark, on the other hand, last celebrated a conference title in 1991, though it was shared with Linfield during the teams’ stint in the Mount Hood (Southern) League of the Columbia Football League.

The break in the history of the NWC was from 1985-1996, and the resurgence also included a move from the NAIA level to NCAA Division III.

Challenges with filling positions led to the cancellation of half the 2005 season for the Pioneers, but the team, staff and athletic program bounced back at full strength in 2006 for a new era of Lewis & Clark football.

Perhaps, it’s safe to say that Bushman breathed life back into the Lewis & Clark program and left Elliott with a solid foundation to build upon.

In 2024, the Pioneers were 5-5 overall and 4-3 in NWC contests, finishing fourth in the eight-team standings.

Lewis & Clark’s 2025 campaign will begin on the road Sept. 6 in a game against NWC foe Puget Sound, which will not count toward the conference standings. They’ll meet again Oct. 4 for their official conference showdown, which will kick off the Pioneers’ slate of seven NWC games.
