The history of the Lewis & Clark football team can be divided into a few distinct eras, and the newest one will begin in 2025 with a head coach who is a proven winner and has inherited a team that is starting to find its footing.

Following more than a decade of struggles, the Pioneers are coming off back-to-back seasons with five wins and top-4 finishes in the Northwest Conference.

The next part of the team’s journey will be under the guidance of new head coach Brett Elliott, who had two stellar seasons as a player with the most dominant team in the NWC, Linfield, after three seasons at the Division I level. He then played professionally from 2006-2011.

Prior to taking the job at Lewis & Clark in January, Elliott spent six years as the offensive coordinator at Linfield, so he has clear idea of what it takes to succeed in the Northwest Conference and in Division III football.

In 2024, Linfield was 10-2 overall, 7-0 in NWC play, claimed the conference title and advanced to the third round of the Division III Playoffs.

Lewis & Clark was just a few places back in the conference standings, finishing fourth. The Pioneers were 5-5 overall and 4-3 in NWC games.

The 2024 campaign was the second consecutive 5-5 performance for Lewis & Clark under Joe Bushman, who was 14-15 in his three seasons in charge, which was a huge improvement from the run the Pioneers were on.

Previously, after limited success and a decline in participation, Lewis & Clark canceled the second half its 2005 season.

Though the team returned at full strength and with a complete schedule in 2006, the Pioneers went on to suffer more than a decade of struggles, including going 0-9 five times and winning three or less games 11 times.

Lewis & Clark’s 2025 campaign will begin on the road Sept. 6 in a game against NWC foe Puget Sound, which will not count toward the conference standings. They’ll meet again Oct. 4 for their official conference showdown, which will kick off the Pioneers’ slate of seven NWC games.

Lewis & Clark From The Beginning

The first era of Lewis & Clark football began with the formation of the NWC in the 1920s, though not much came of it. The school was known as Albany College at the time.

The “modern” era of Lewis & Clark football started in 1946 with moderate success over the years.

After some conference jumping and structural changes within the NWC, the Pioneers found themselves back in the Northwest Conference in 1996 and making the leap from the NAIA level to the NCAA Division III ranks, where they play today.
