The Whitworth University football team has been exemplary under head coach Rod Sandberg, who took the reigns for the 2014 season and has known nothing but winning campaigns during his tenure.

Over the last two years, the Pirates are 20-3, won the 2023 Northwest Conference championship and have been to the NCAA Division III Playoffs both years. 

Sandberg is 84-24 overall at Whitworth and was named NWC Coach of the Year in 2018 and 2023. He led the Pirates to conference titles in 2018 and 2023 and playoff appearances in 2015, 2018, 2023 and 2024.

After opening the 2024 season with nine consecutive wins, things turned sour for the defending conference champions.

First, Linfield got redemption in the final game of the regular season, defeating Whitworth handily, 34-7, to lock up the NWC crown – the same thing the Pirates did to the Wildcats the year before.

Despite the loss, Whitworth still advanced to the 2024 playoffs and took advantage of the opportunity with a first-round win over Pomona-Pitzer (21-13). That’s where the dream ended for the Pirates, however, as they lost their next game to eventual national champion North Central (42-17).

The Pirates’ quest for a third consecutive 10-win season and a return to supremacy in the Northwest Conference will begin at home Sept. 6 against Gustavus Adolphus.

Whitworth will have three nonconference games to shake off any rust, before kicking off a slate of seven consecutive NWC contests. The first will be on the road against Pacific on Oct. 4, while the Pirates’ 2025 meeting with Linfield will come earlier in the season. The two will tussle at Linfield on Oct. 18.

The first round of the 2025 NCAA Division III Playoffs will be Nov. 22.

The 2025 Division III Football Championship title game will be played Jan. 10, 2026, at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.
