Looking to turn around a struggling program, Dave Marquis will kick off a new era as Otterbein Football's newest head coach in 2025. 

Marquis was hired after a 1-9 season as the Cardinals are on the hunt for their first winning season since 2017.

He comes to Otterbein from Valparaiso University, an NCAA Division I FCS team, where he was the defensive coordinator. He has extensive experience as a defensive coordinator at the Division I and Division III levels, and has led teams in historic improvements, which is exactly what the Cardinals need. 

As the season approaches, he’s focused on his roster, which is full of returning players. Quarterback Cayden Lassiter is returning for his junior season and is set to lead the Cardinals after running for 260 yards and throwing for 638 yards and one touchdown in 2024. 

Running back Matt Griffin led the team in touchdowns with four, while rushing for 227 yards in seven games.  

On defense, Thomas Cherry will be returning for his senior season, looking to follow up a team-high 97 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and two two-sack season in 2025. While most of the defense will have a new look, having a veteran like Cherry brings valuable experience. 

Colton Weisbrod also brings experience on defense after a freshman season that saw him named OAC Defensive Player of the Week. He will add a veteran presence in the secondary. 

While rebuilding Otterbein will be a challenge, having established veterans on both sides of the ball will make it a significantly easier task than a completely fresh start.
