There are few safe bets in sports, but one thing that’s almost a guarantee is that the Wingate football team will win at least eight games each year. 

And if you keep putting yourself in position to succeed, the rewards will come, which is what happened for the Bulldogs in 2024.

A 6-1 record in South Atlantic Conference play, including a 14-10 win over always tough Lenoir-Rhyne, helped Wingate win the SAC’s Piedmont Division.

The Bulldogs took advantage of the chance to play for the conference championship and defeated Mountain Division winner Carson-Newman in the title tilt, 28-13. It was Wingate’s third SAC title overall and first since 2017.

The season’s momentum carried Wingate into the NCAA Division II Playoffs for the sixth time overall and fifth time in seven years. Unfortunately, the team’s seven-game winning streak came to an end with a 34-31 overtime loss to Virginia Union in the first round of the postseason.

The Bulldogs finished the season at 9-2, marking their eight consecutive year with at least eight wins, with the exception of a pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.

Wingate’s SAC title defense in 2025 will begin Aug. 30 with the first of two nonconference games. First, UNC Pembroke will visit Irwin Belk Stadium, which will be followed by a visit from Bluefield State on Sept. 13.

The Bulldogs’ run of nine straight conference games will start on the road at UVA Wise on Sept. 20.
