Does UVA Wise head coach Gary Bass have what it takes to turn his team into a contender in the SAC? Here’s the Highland Cavaliers’ 2025 schedule.

Last year, under the guidance of new head coach Gary Bass, the UVA Wise football team doubled the number of wins it had in 2023.

Regardless of the team’s record, which was 4-6, the improvement has to be encouraging for the players and fans, who last saw a winning season in 2016. The one before that was 2008.

Since UVA Wise added football in 1991, the Highland Cavaliers have finished above .500 only 11 times, with six coming before the end of the 1990s. 

Will Bass’ experience as a player in the South Atlantic Conference, plus nearly two decades of coaching experience after his playing days concluded, be the spark UVA Wise needs to become a contender in the new-look SAC, which has gone away from its two-division format?

Only time will tell, of course, but 2024 offered a great start in that direction. 

For his second year at the helm, Bass’ fellow SAC coaches have selected UVA Wise to finish ninth in the 10-team conference. 

The Cavaliers will play 11 games this year, with six coming at home.

The action will begin on their home turf against Concord on Aug. 30, while conference play starts a week later when Newberry visits Sept. 6.

UVA Wise’s first away game will be the team’s Sept. 13 meeting with Catawba, Bass’ alma mater. The Cavaliers beat the Indians 31-28 last year to improve to 3-0 all-time.
