When Gary Bass was an offensive lineman for Catawba College in the early 2000s, UVA Wise had not yet joined the South Atlantic Conference.

Now that he’s the head coach at UVA Wise, he’ll get to face his alma mater each year during the regular season, as UVA Wise has been part of the SAC football scene since the 2019 campaign.

Bass’ first opportunity to take on his former team came early in his debut season with the Highland Cavaliers last year, and the result went in his favor, a 31-28 win for UVA Wise.

The Cavaliers are 2-0 at home and 1-0 on the road against the Indians, with Catawba set to host their meeting in 2025 on Sept. 13.

Bass arrived at UVA Wise in December 2023 with three years of collegiate playing experience and nearly two decades of coaching experience, including 14 years at the NCAA Division II level. 

Beating his former team was only a small piece of the success Bass found in his first season in Wise, Virginia, but there’s still some work to be done before the Cavaliers are part of the championship discussion.

Bass and his staff inherited a team that was 2-9 overall in 2023 and 1-8 in SAC games, and they managed to double both win totals, guiding UVA Wise to a 4-6 mark in 2024, including a 2-5 performance in conference play. The Cavaliers finished fourth in the SAC’s six-team Mountain Division. 

As Bass returns for his sophomore campaign at UVA Wise, the conference’s coaches have selected his squad to finish ninth among the 10 teams in the restructured SAC.

The Highland Cavaliers will play 11 games this year, with six coming at home.

The action will begin on their home turf, with Concord coming to town Aug. 30, while conference play starts a week later when Newberry visits Sept. 6.

UVA Wise’s first away game will be the team’s Sept. 13 meeting with Catawba.
