The Newberry College football team may be coming off back-to-back losing seasons, but the school has not lost faith in longtime head coach Todd Knight, who recently had his contract with the team extended through 2031.

Knight is on the cusp of his 100th victory – he’s 96-75 overall – and is the winningest coach in school history. He has led the Wolves to three South Atlantic Conference titles and four playoff appearances, and he has been named SAC Coach of the Year three times.

Last year, Newberry was 3-7 overall and 3-4 in conference action, finishing in the lower half of the SAC’s six-team Piedmont Division standings. It was the Wolves’ second straight losing season, after going 4-7 in 2023.

As the Wolves look to get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2021, and Knight chases his next milestone, the journey certainly will not be an easy one, and there won’t be any time to warm up before the start of conference play this year.

Newberry’s first game this season, a trip to UVA Wise on Sept. 6, also will mark the start of the Wolves’ nine-game SAC slate for the year. The team’s home opener will come a week later in a nonconference matchup with Point University.
