The Coast Guard Bears have failed to claim a winning season since 2018, two seasons before C.C. Grant took over as head coach. Grant spent the prior 15 years as the co-defensive coordinator and six as the offensive coordinator.

It’s taken some time for Grant to get adjusted to his role, but he has seen back-to-back seasons with 5-5 overall records in 2023 and 2024.

The Bears were lucky enough to retain starting quarterback Joey Armentrout, who threw for 2,723 yards, over 20 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He was also able to run the ball in for five touchdowns and averaged 22 rushing yards per game. 

It also helped that James Wheeler IV grew into his legs for his sophomore season, going from 328 rushing yards in 2023 to 1,063 in 2024 as the team’s lead running back. He contributed six touchdowns and even one receiving touchdown for the Bears. 

Wheeler earned NEWMAC Football All-Conference First Team selection, alongside junior wide receiver Broock Desta. Desta had 727 receiving yards and a team-high nine receiving touchdowns. 

The 2025 roster has not yet been revealed, but Wheeler and Desta are likely to return for what will hopefully be another successful season of development for the young phenoms. 

Armentrout just capped off his senior season, so his return is not guaranteed. 

Who Is The Coast Guard Football Head Coach?

C.C. Grant is coming into his sixth season with the Coast Guard Bears and has seen the most success so far within the past two seasons. 

Grant has stayed with the program since 1998, when he got hired as the team’s offensive coordinator. He later transitioned to the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in 2004. 

Despite his football background, Grant has found more promise in his baseball coaching career than in football. The Bears football team currently has a 15-26 record under Grant, while he is the second-winningest coach to lead baseball.
