Emory & Henry University clearly knew there was something special about head coach Quintin Hunter, and the school did not let the 2024 football season end without removing the word “interim” from his job title.

Hunter, previously the squad’s assistant coach and offensive coordinator, assumed the role in July 2024, stepping in for longtime leader Curt Newsome, who left the team due to health concerns.

In Newsome’s final two seasons, also the team’s first two years in the South Atlantic Conference, the Wasps were 5-6, while Hunter found immediate success, opening the 2024 season with three consecutive wins.

By the time the interim tag was removed with a week to go in the regular season, Hunter had guided the Wasps to an 8-2 start and a 6-2 mark in the SAC, which was good for a second-place finish in the Mountain Division.

Additionally, the team received votes for the first time in the AFCA Division II Coaches Poll and was mentioned in the first NCAA Division II Super Region II Rankings of the year.

Hunter’s promotion was announced in mid-November after a 62-14 win over rival UVA Wise, and he celebrated the occasion by leading the Wasps past Newberry to close the year and a 9-2 debut season. 

The nine victories were the most for Emory & Henry since a 10-0 record and Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship in 1998. 

Hunter’s first full season officially at the helm at Emory & Henry will begin on the road Aug. 30 against Glenville State. Conference play will start immediately after, with Catawba coming to town Sept. 6.

Expectations are high, too, as the 2025 SAC Preseason Football Coaches' Poll has the Wasps finishing fourth in the conference this year.
