The USMMA Mariners faced a less-than-ideal season in 2024 in their third season under head coach Jameson Croall, posting their worst record in nearly 10 years at 5-4 overall and 3-4 in conference.

Starting quarterback Gervy Alota matured from 800 passing yards in 2023 to 1,283 in 2024, scoring 10 passing touchdowns through nine games. He also made contributions with the rush game, making an additional 12 rushing touchdowns and gaining 539 yards on the ground.

Arguably more impressive than Alota himself was his right-hand, senior wide receiver Talsen Smith. He had a career-high in receiving yards last year with 1,085 and made 10 touchdowns for the Mariners. He earned All-NEWMAC First Team, D3football.com First Team All-Region, and AFCA Second Team All-American recognitions for his efforts. 

Although the official 2025 roster has not been revealed yet, Alota could see a senior campaign with the Mariners, while Smith is likely to depart following a successful senior year. If Smith were to return for USMMA, he and Alota could collaborate to bring the Mariners back to a promising record.
