Juniata football has been around for more than a century, and like any program in any sport, there have been peaks and valleys for the Eagles.

After some early struggles, Juniata celebrated 10 seasons on the gridiron with its first winning campaign in 1929.

Following another lull – and World War II – the team found its footing and put together eight consecutive seasons from 1952-1959 with six or more wins, also known at the school as the “Glory Years.”

The highlight in Juniata’s football history was a record 10-2 season in 1973 that saw the squad finish as the NCAA Division III runner-up.

The post-COVID era has not been kind to the Eagles, but the 2025 season will offer another clean slate for third-year head coach Blake Treadwell and his team.

Treadwell inherited a team that was 1-9 in 2021 and 0-10 in 2022, all while playing in the Centennial Conference, but he definitely has helped the Eagles see some forward progress in their first two years in the new Landmark Conference.

Juniata was 1-9 in 2023 (0-6 in Landmark play) and then 2-8 (1-5) in 2024, finishing seventh and sixth, respectively in the Landmark standings.

The progress may be slow and steady so far, but it also wouldn’t be a first in Juniata football history if a drastic turnaround happened and was followed by a half-dozen winning seasons.

Perhaps the key to that success will be new defensive coordinator Matt Adolph, who joined the team in February 2025.

The next chapter for the Eagles will begin on the road Sept. 5 when they travel to face Gettysburg. Their first Landmark matchup will come at home Oct. 4 against newcomer Western Connecticut State.
