There’s no doubt that Western Connecticut State University’s recent success on the gridiron should have the Wolves optimistic about the 2025 college football season, but there also are some pretty big unknowns.

The team will enter the new campaign as part of a new conference and with a first-year head coach, and while many of the necessary pieces already may be in place, there could be some learning curves during the transition.

WestConn will get its first test at home in Danbury, Connecticut, on Sept. 6 when William Paterson comes to town.

The Wolves will have three nonconference games to lock things in before hitting the road to face their first opponent on their conference schedule – Juniata College – one of the Landmark Conference’s original teams.

The Landmark Conference debuted in 2023 and was expected to have eight teams for the 2025 season, before uncertainly and changes at Keystone College meant losing the Giants and seeing the number of participating schools drop back down to seven.

Susquehanna has dominated the first two years of Landmark play, compiling a 12-0 record in conference games.

WestConn is coming off a 9-2 season that saw the Wolves go 8-1 in the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference and finish second. Their season ended in the ECAC Asa S. Bushnell Bowl Game with a 45-14 win over Alfred University.

The new era in Western Connecticut State football will be guided by interim head coach Kevin Jones, formerly the team’s defensive coordinator. His position was elevated in May shortly after the resignation of longtime head coach Joe Loth.
