In August 2024, it was announced that the Western Connecticut State University football team would be the first addition to the now not-so-new Landmark Conference and bring the total number of teams to eight.
The Wolves were approved as an associate member in football for the 2025 season, the conference’s third year in action.
Unfortunately, due to financial and accreditation woes at Keystone College, plus structural changes within its athletic program and general uncertainty, the Giants won’t be part of the Landmark landscape for the foreseeable future, bringing the number of teams back to seven.

Western Connecticut State makes the move from the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference, where the Wolves were 7-2 overall in 2023, earning a share of the conference title and the MASCAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Football Championship.
Though that playoff run was short-lived, featuring a 62-20 loss to John Hopkins in the first round, the Wolves rebounded with a successful 2024 campaign that included a 9-2 overall record and an 8-1 mark in MASCAC play.
Despite the improvement, however, WestConn finished second in the conference behind UMass-Dartmouth (9-0) and missed out on a return to the playoffs. Instead, the Wolves were selected to play in the ECAC Asa S. Bushnell Bowl Game, where they defeated Alfred University, 45-14.
Shortly after the season, head coach Joe Loth, who took over at Western Connecticut State in 2012, decided to leave to pursue other opportunities. Though he inherited a team that had lost 21 consecutive games, he left behind a winning program.
Immediately after the announcement of Loth’s departure, defensive coordinator Kevin Jones became the program’s primary contact, and within a week, he was named interim head coach and will guide the Wolves through their transition into the Landmark Conference.
WestConn will open its season at home Sept. 6 against William Paterson and play three nonconference games, before facing its first Landmark opponent, Juniata College, on Oct. 4.
