Through two seasons in the new Landmark Conference, Catholic University has been a middle-of-the-pack performer, quietly hiding in the vast shadow of a dominant Susquehanna team.
However, while the River Hawks were rolling into the NCAA Division III Players and snatching up the on-field Landmark football awards, it was the Catholic coaches who were named Landmark Conference Coaching Staff of the Year for 2024.
The crew was led by Mike Gutelius, and will be again in 2025, but there’s more to the story than just the Cardinals’ 5-5 overall record.

Catholic’s coaching staff is the definition of teamwork.
Prior to the start of the 2024 campaign, Gutelius was diagnosed with a type of brain cancer, which required multiple surgeries and continued treatment that lasted through the season.
While he was on-site for seven of the Cardinals’ 10 games, the rest of the coaching staff (associate head coach Jonathan Rutledge and assistant head coach Brandon Beech) put in the extra work necessary to help the team to a fourth consecutive season of .500 or better.
Along with the recognition for the coaches, Catholic landed seven players on the Landmark all-conference teams. There was one second-team selection and seven honorable mentions (kicker Connor Gill received HM as the punter and placekicker).
Prior to being one of the founding teams of the Landmark Conference in 2023, Catholic, which is located in Washington, D.C., played in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference.
The Cardinals were 6-5 overall in 2022 and 5-1 in NEWMAC play, but a loss to Springfield in the final conference game of the year cost Catholic the NEWMAC title and a spot in the Division III playoffs. Instead, the team’s season finale was a 34-24 loss to Bridgewater State in the New England Bowl.
The year prior, the Cardinals were 6-4 overall and 4-2 in conference action.
Catholic made the move to the Landmark Conference the following season, and the Cardinals have been 5-5 (3-3 in conference play) both years. In 2024, they finished fourth in the seven-team conference.
In 2025, Catholic will open with four nonconference games, beginning Sept. 5, before ending the year with six consecutive Landmark games.
