William & Mary has not compared in recent years to its break through season in 2022 when the Tribe went 11-2 overall and reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA D1 Playoffs. The Tribe put up a 7-5 record in 2024 and finished it out on a less-than-ideal note with a complete shutout from Richmond in the Capital Cup.

Senior quarterback Darius Wilson passed for nearly 2,000 yards, 12 touchdowns, and eight interceptions last season and ended his four-year tenure as just one of two players in school history to record 5,000 career yards. Rising junior quarterback Tyler Hughes is now next in line for the throne, who saw minimal time last season as backup.  

Through six games played, Hughes threw for 132 yards and two interceptions on 23 attempts. Hughes is not guaranteed the starting spot, as William & Mary have brought in a transfer quarterback from Syracuse, but it’s most likely that he will be the first option with his experience.

Along with the departure of Wilson, William & Mary will be without its prime wide receiver senior Mathis Hollis, who caught 52 passes for 602 yards and three touchdowns. However, the program returns incoming junior tight end Sean McElwain, who scored five touchdowns and averaged 18 yards per catch.
