The Villanova Wildcats celebrated a 10-4 overall record in 2024 and their second consecutive season with 10 wins. They went on to compete through the second round of the FCS Playoffs, holding Incarnate Word to just 13 points but taking a loss. Now they look to revamp on both sides of the ball to keep the success going.

But the two defensive stars that helped the Wildcats to the playoffs won't be making a return: cornerback Isas Waxter and linebacker Brandon Bell. The pair took home a variety of accolades after their final, fifth-year seasons last year, including Stats Perform FCS All-America Team selections and CAA Football First Team Defense. Bell led the team with 126 tackles and 16 tackles for loss with three sacks and an interception returned for a touchdown. Waxter totaled 33 tackles, forced three fumbles and had two pass break-ups.  

While the updated roster has yet to be announced, rising senior linebacker Shane Hartzell could be a player to look out for on defense to replace Bell. Hartzell notched 121 tackles and a team-high five sacks last season. 

Despite the loss, Villanova looks to remain dominant under head coach Mike Ferrante, who will enter his ninth season with the team and 39th year overall to include his 30 years as assistant head coach from 1987-2016.
