UAlbany Football 2025 Season Preview | CAA Football
The UAlbany Great Danes must figure out who will be at the helm this season and who will take them back to a winning season.
A dramatic ending to the 2024 season for UAlbany Football was highlighted by Jared Ambrose getting assigned as interim head coach, and now the future looks uncertain for the Great Danes as they still search for a permanent solution.

Former head coach Greg Gattuso finished his final season with the team at a 4-8 overall record, 2-6 in conference, a disappointing change from the previous 11-4 record the Great Danes held just the season prior.
UAlbany’s successful 2023 season was scripted by redshirt sophomore quarterback Reese Poffenbarger. He threw for 3,603 yards and 36 touchdowns, averaging nearly 250 yards per game. Poffenbarger collaborated with senior wide receiver Brevin Easton for 1,086 yards and 13 touchdowns on 57 catches, but both stars headed down different paths in 2024.
Sophomore Myles Burkett filled in for Poffenbarger, replicating a fraction of his stats with 1,845 yards and 10 touchdowns. Freshman running back Jojo Uga collected just over 400 rushing yards, while senior wide receiver Seven McGee caught 47 passes for 644 yards.
The quarterback situation for the Great Danes this upcoming season is still in question, as the expected starter sophomore Van Weber suffered a knee injury during spring practice. Georgia Tech transfer and sophomore Aidan Semo and sophomore Kyle Keckler are looking like the only other options at the moment.
Who Is The UAlbany Football Coach?
UAlbany was surprised to hear that head coach Greg Gattuso was stepping down following the 2024 season, seeing as he just capped off his 11th season with the squad. Gattuso ultimately took a position with Penn State, his alma mater, leaving the school to announce associate head coach Jared Ambrose as the interim head coach.
It has not yet been announced who will be taking over for Ambrose, but in the meantime, he has proven to be a qualified leader for the Great Danes. Ambrose served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2022 and was promoted to associate head coach the following year.
