If it’s truly not about how you start, but how you finish, the Wayne State football team definitely had some things to be proud of during the 2024 season.

After starting off the year with six consecutive losses, the Warriors had a confidence-boosting turning point in a unique battle against eventual NCAA Division II national champion Ferris State.

It was a game that spanned two days due to inclement weather, and the host Warriors unexpectedly pushed their guests to the brink of what could’ve been a season-wrecking loss.

By that point in the season, the Bulldogs were absolutely dominating their opponents, but Wayne State held firm and nearly made a second-half comeback that would’ve been felt across the Division II ranks.

Though the Warriors lost the game 27-14, it was a huge statement and a preview of what was to come.

Wayne State went on to compile an 0-9 record to start the season, including consecutive losses to the top five teams in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, but the Warriors rallied for back-to-back wins to secure the No. 6 spot in the conference standings.

WSU downed GLIAC newcomer Roosevelt 38-14 and then closed the season with a 30-14 home win over winless Northern Michigan. Yes, those were the bottom teams in the conference, but it had to be an amazing feeling for the Warriors to end the year on such a high note.

When Wayne State returns to action in 2025, third-year head coach Tyrone Wheatley will be supported by a new offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach and a new wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator.

Wheatley also added a defensive line coach, linebacker coach/special teams coordinator and a director of player personnel/player development coach.

The coaching changes are in addition to the signing of 31 players on National Signing Day in February.

The team’s attempt to improve on last year’s 2-9/2-5 record will begin at home Sept. 4 against Tiffin. The season again will end with contests against Roosevelt and Northern Michigan, respectively, with both games being on the road.
