Former Michigan Tech quarterback Dan Mettlach returned to his alma mater in 2017 and was named head coach prior to the 2023 season, and he has helped the Huskies improve each year he has been in charge.
In 2023, his squad was 5-5 overall, though there were some struggles in conference play on the way to a 1-5 mark. The season prior to his promotion, the Huskies were 4-7 overall and 2-4 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Last season, Michigan Tech got out to a fast start, going 4-1, including a four-game winning streak. Even with things cooled down shortly after, the team’s 7-4/5-3 record was a sign of potential and progress.

The journey likely won’t get any easier for the Huskies in 2025, as they’ll again have to chase two of the best teams in Division II football – Ferris State and Grand Valley State.
The powerhouses regularly fight for the GLIAC title at a level well beyond the reach of the rest of the conference, and Ferris State, the reigning Division II national champion, will enter the year looking for a fourth national title in five seasons.
Are Mettlach and the Huskies up for the challenge? Or at least primed to continue their upward trajectory and improve on their tie for third place in the conference standings last year?
