Perennially, the Michigan Tech Football team is a middle-of-the-road performer in the stacked Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, typically finishing each season looking up at the likes of Ferris State and Grand Valley State.

The Huskies do sometimes find surges of success, but they’re always just a little short of the oomph needed to get to the top.

In 2014, Michigan Tech was 9-1 in conference play, finishing second behind undefeated Ferris State. The next year, the Huskies were 7-3 and third behind FSU and GVSU. However, they haven’t won more than five conference games since.

Michigan Tech was streaky during the 2024 season but showed improvement from the previous two years. Unfortunately, a 4-1 start that included four consecutive wins after a season-opening overtime loss turned into a 7-4 season with a 4-3 record in GLIAC play.

There’s certainly no shame in finishing tied for third in your conference, especially if the top two teams are playoff-bound titans that both spent time at the top of the Division II rankings, but you also wouldn’t be a competitor if you didn’t go into each season expecting more.

The Huskies were not invisible last year, landing six players on the All-GLIAC first team and four on the second team, while another five earned honorable mentions.

The potential is there for Michigan Tech, and the addition of more than two dozen players for the 2025 campaign should have head coach Dan Mettlach optimistic about the team’s trajectory.

In his first season at the helm (2023), Mettlach led the squad to a 5-5 overall record. As noted above, things got even better in 2024.

The 2025 season will be the 103rd for Michigan Tech football. The team will play 11 games, a slate that includes six road contests and five games at home at Kearly Stadium in Houghton, Michigan. The action will kick off at home Aug. 28 against Bemidji State.
