While Maine lost its top two wide receivers in Moss Montigo to the NFL and Joe Gillette, it’s returning running back Brian Santana-Fis, who rushed for 429 yards on 84 carries and three touchdowns. He also caught 10 passes for 97 yards. Not only does Peevy have his top running back returning, but he also has three of his top five receivers from 2024.
Molayo Irefin, Nick Laughin, and Trevin Ewing combined for 51 catches for 670 yards and two touchdowns. The Black Bears turned to the transfer portal to add more depth at wide receiver and gained Scott Woods, a graduate transfer from Harvard. In 2024, Woods caught 52 passes for 547 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Crimson to a 10-2 Ivy League record. Not only is he talented at receiver, but he is also a skilled returner and was named a first-team All-Ivy League returner, catching 19 punts and returning them 290 yards.
The Maine defense has a lot more work to do than the offense after losing most of its top players. Christian Thomas, a senior linebacker, is the best returning player and recorded 63 total tackles and 1.5 sacks for 11 yards last season.
At defensive back, Devin Vaught, a redshirt sophomore, recorded 42 tackles and led the Black Bears in interceptions with three. Jamaree Gibson, a redshirt junior, had the only pick-six of the season, returning an interception for 78 yards against UAlbany. Out of the transfer portal, Maine added senior defensive back Corey Wilson from Hampton, who will bring important experience and depth in the secondary.
Maine Football Head Coach
Led by Jordan Stevens, who is in his third season as head coach of the Black Bears, returned to Maine after seven seasons as an assistant coach at Yale. A defensive-minded coach, Stevens led Yale to historic defensive seasons as co-defensive coordinator in 2021, leading the nation in third-down conversion, allowing just 22.1% to be converted.
A Black Bears football alum, Stevens is looking to lead Maine back to being a winning program and a consistent CAA competitor.
