The Elon offense will have to work quickly to establish a starting quarterback, as there is a large question mark about who that will be. The Phoenix added redshirt sophomore Marco Lainez out of the transfer portal from Iowa, who has experience at the FBS level, but only appeared in one game, going 2-7 and rushing for 52 yards in the 2024 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl.
Running back TJ Thomas Jr is going into his sophomore season for Elon after an impressive freshman year where he rushed for 577 yards on 89 carries and five touchdowns. In the air, Jamarien Dalton is the top returning wide receiver, as the redshirt senior caught 31 passes for 408 yards and two touchdowns last season. Thomas Jr is also utilized as a wide receiver and caught 13 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown in 2024.
Tight end Dylan Magazu also brings a veteran presence to the Phoenix offense, as he caught 10 passes for 72 yards and one touchdown during his freshman season. The Elon offense is young and inexperienced, but has a few veterans to lean on in 2025.
On defense, sophomore defensive lineman Kahmari Brown leads the way. In 2024, he had 15 solo tackles, 23 total, four sacks for a total of 44 yards lost and one forced fumble. Behind Brown, redshirt junior Senquavious Alsobrooks leads the secondary and in 2024 he had 33 total tackles, 28 of them solo and five passes defended.
Similarly to the offense, Elon lost many veterans on defense and will have lots of work to do to become a cohesive unit going into the 2025 season. Finishing 5-3 put the Phoenix in a tie for sixth place in the conference, and they will hope to improve on that record this season with a new-look conference featuring several new teams.
Who Is The Elon Football Head Coach?
Going into his seventh season as Elon head coach, Tony Trisciani knows what it takes to win and since transitioning to head coach, has taken the Phoenix to the NCAA FCS Playoffs three times. As head coach, he holds a 26-25 overall record with a 21-15 CAA record. He succeeded Curt Cignetti, who would go on to be the head coach at James Madison and then Indiana, giving Trisciani a mentor who knows how to win at the Power 4 level.
While Trisciani will have a lot of work to do to get his team ready for the 2025 season, he has all of the right resources and skills to do so. Highly popular among his athletes, he has the buy in to his program that any coach needs and also has veterans he can rely on to help guide his new players.
