CAA Women's Basketball Tournament 2024 Predictions: Can Stony Brook win it?

The CAA Women’s Basketball Tournament will be going down in Washington D.C from March 13-17 at the Entertainment & Sports Arena. All 14 teams across the CAA will compete for a CAA Tournament Title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

At the forefront of the CAA Conference is Stony Brook Women’s Basketball at the No.1 seed in the CAA Standings and a chance to win its first title in school history. Monmouth, who is the reigning 2023 CAA Tournament Champions, are also amongst the top seeds ranking at No. 3

In the history of the Women’s CAA Basketball Tournament, Old Dominion and James Madison are the most decorated champions across the conference. Old Dominion has 17 tournament championships followed by James Madison with nine. Prior to these programs leaving the CAA, the closest active CAA program in comparison is Delaware with three tournament titles.

Last year, Monmouth won the 2023 CAA Tournament in the programs first year in the CAA conference.

This year's 2023-24 CAA standings features a new group of top contending teams as opposed to the previous. Here’s a look at teams that could win the 2024 CAA Women’s Basketball tournament and earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

CAA Women’s Basketball Tournament 2024 Predictions

Here’s a look at some of the teams who could win the CAA Championship and make a run in March Madness.

Stony Brook (21-3, 12-2)

Stony Brook has taken control of the CAA this season holding the No.1 for the entirety of CAA Conference play. This is only the second year the Seawolves have been in the CAA after recently transitioning from America East and have continued to show they are a top Mid Major program.

Head Coach Ashley Langford, who was appointed the position in 2021, has completely revamped this Stony Brook offense and propelled them to the top of the CAA. The Seawolves have ranked No.2 in scoring offense the last two seasons, this season they are averaging 75 ppg only trailing to Charleston at 76 ppg. Last year they finished the regular season at No.6 and made it to the second round of the CAA tournament where they lost 85-65 vs. Northeastern.

Leading the charge for Stony Brook this year are two of the CAA’s leading scorers in Gigi Gonzalez and Khari Clark. Gonzalez leads the CAA in scoring averaging 16.2 points per game on 41.7% FG shooting and 35.3% from beyond the arc. Clark ranks third in CAA scoring averaging 15.9 points per game on 62.5% FG shooting and 38.9% 3-point-FG. With the high scoring output of Clark and Gonzalez along with the Seawolves earning the No.1 seed, the Seawolves are looking poised to win their first CAA Tournament Title.

North Carolina A&T (17-8, 11-3)

North Carolina A&T has positioned themselves second in the CAA standings in only their

second season in the CAA. Last year the Aggies finished (18-12,12-6) in their first season in the CAA, their season would end with a 66-59 first round loss in the CAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Head Coach Tarrell Robinson who has been at the helm of the program since 2012 continues to keep N.C. A&T in championship conversation regardless of conference. Robison has added three Conference championships from the program's time spent in the MEAC. Robison has propelled the Aggies to the top of the CAA ranking with an emphasis on his defensive philosophy. The Aggies are ranked third in the CAA this season in scoring defense averaging 56 ppg, and improvement from 63 ppg the previous year.

The Coaching from Robinson paired with a roster that provides balanced scoring and a top ranked defense make the Aggies a team who could make a run in March.

Monmouth (18-8, 11-4)

The Monmouth Hawks won the 2023 CAA Tournament Championship in their first season as a part of the CAA. In the Championship game the Hawks defeated No.1 seed Towson 80-55. Despite the Hawks finishing the 2023 season 9-9 in conference play they still proved to be a championship caliber team.

Much of the credit goes to Head Coach Ginny Boggess who took over the Women’s Basketball program in 2021. Boggess was also the second-fastest head coach in program history to reach double-digit wins in her/his inaugural season. The winning culture that Boggess is implementing makes the future of this Hawks program one worth keeping eyes on.

Despite Monmouth not having an explosive scorer, this team is well coached and knows what it takes to win. If senior guards Kaci Donovan and Ariana Vanderhoop can continue to produce in the backcourt, the Hawks will have a chance to earn a second consecutive CAA Tournament Title.

When is the CAA Women ’s Basketball Tournament 2024?

The 2024 CAA Women's Basketball Championship will be held from March 13-17 in Washington D.C.

Seeding for the tournament will be set at the end of the CAA regular season on March 9.

Women’s CAA Basketball Tournament 2024 Schedule

All Times Eastern

Round 1 will begin Wednesday, March 13 with game one at 2 p.m. Game two will be played at 4:30 p.m.
Round 2 will begin Thursday, March 14 with four games from 12 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
Quarterfinals will begin Friday, March 15 with four games from 12 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
Semifinals will begin Saturday, March 16 at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
The championship game will begin Sunday, March 17 at 2 p.m.

When Does The 2024 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Start?

The tournament will begin with Selection Sunday on March 17, followed by the First Four on March 20-21.

After the opening round is complete, the field will be set with the top 64 teams and the first round will start on March 22-23.
