Coastal Athletic Association newcomer North Carolina A&T will be on the road for the third time in four weeks, this time heading to Delaware to meet the Blue Hens for the first time as CAA rivals. Their Week 7 meeting at Delaware Stadium also will be the Blue Hens’ homecoming game.

North Carolina A&T is two weeks removed from the first win of its 2023 season, but the Aggies still are searching for their first CAA victory. Last week, they lost to Villanova at home in Greensboro, 37-14, to slip to 0-2 in conference play and 1-4 overall.

Delaware is coming off a 43-17 nonconference win against Duquesne and starting a six-game run of CAA games that will close out the 2023 regular season. The Blue Hens are 4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play, which includes wins over Stony Brook and New Hampshire.

The Blue Hens are tied with UAlbany for second place in the conference standings, behind Elon, which is 3-0.

Saturday’s meeting between N.C. A&T and Delaware will be the second in history. The first was a nonconference game 45 years ago to the day—in 1978—with Delaware cruising to a 26-0 win at home.

The Blue Hens were the NCAA Division II national runners-up that season, falling to Eastern Illinois in the championship game, 10-9.

Coming into this week’s game, Delaware is ranked No. 8 in the American Football Coaches Association FCS Poll and No. 8 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25.

What To Know About North Carolina A&T Football

North Carolina A&T rode the momentum of its first win (28-26 over Norfolk State in Week 5) to a hot start last week against Villanova, but the Wildcats were just too much, using a 20-point second quarter to put the game out of reach early.

The Aggies had the home crowd on its feet early in the game, as redshirt senior Taymon Cooke returned a kickoff 94 yards to give N.C. A&T a 7-3 first-quarter advantage. Cooke now leads the country in kickoff returns for touchdowns (two) and yards per return (38.9).

Unfortunately, the North Carolina A&T offense never got going.

The Aggies only had 54 yards of total offense in the first half, compared to 373 for Villanova. The second half went better for the Aggies, but they were still outmatched offensively in the game, 537-172.

The lone offensive score for N.C. A&T in the loss was a 25-yard scamper from freshman quarterback Kevin White in the second quarter to put the Aggies up 14-13.

White was 8-for-17 through the air for 64 yards, but he was sacked four times.

For the season, the Aggies are averaging just 211.6 yards per game, while being outscored 155-67 for the season.

What To Know About University of Delaware Football

Delaware has won three consecutive games since a 63-7 loss to Penn State, a top-10 team in the FBS polls, on Sept. 9.

Junior quarterback Ryan O’Connor is coming off a career game that included personal highs for completions (28), passing yards (347) and touchdown passes (four). For the year, he is 92-for-149 for 1,242 yards and 11 touchdowns, along with three interceptions.

The Blue Hens had 466 yards in last week’s win over Duquesne. That included 162 rushing yards to complement O’Connor’s performance.

Delaware outgained the Dukes in the second half, 256-58, while keeping them scoreless for the final two quarters. The Blue Hens led at halftime, 22-17.

Graduate linebacker Jackson Taylor anchored the Delaware defense against the Dukes, tallying 13 tackles. He leads the team for the year with 44 total tackles. Senior linebacker Dillon Trainer is second with 25.

Saturday’s action against the Aggies will conclude a four-game homestand for the Blue Hens, who then will hit the road for a pair of conference games against Hampton and Towson.

Last season, Delaware was 8-5 overall and a middle-of-the-standings 4-4 in CAA play.

What’s The Weather Forecast?

There is a high potential for rainfall Saturday in Newark, Delaware—more than 95 percent during the day and about 93 percent at night—so the Aggies and Blue Hens should expect some sloppy football.

Wind will be mild (5-15 mph), while the temperature will sneak into the low 60s during the day and into the low 50s at night.
