Villanova will make the trip south to take on Coastal Athletic Association newcomer North Carolina A&T in Week 6, and their first meeting as conference opponents will take place at Truist Stadium, the Aggies’ 21,500-seat home venue.

Villanova (3-2, 1-1) has had an up-and-down year, and the Wildcats will be on the road for the second consecutive week, this time looking to bounce back from their first conference loss of the season.

The Wildcats lost to UAlbany last week, 31-10, failing to score in the second half, while the Great Danes piled on 14 points in the fourth quarter.

A week earlier, Villanova opened CAA play with a 35-9 win against Rhode Island, but the Wildcats now find themselves in the middle of the conference standings. Elon is setting the pace at 3-0, followed by Delaware (2-0).

This week’s meeting with NC A&T will be the third of eight consecutive conference games for Villanova, so there’s plenty of time left for a run at the title.

New North Carolina A&T head coach Vincent Brown is familiar with winning and with success in the CAA, as he previously was part of the coaching staff at CAA powerhouse William & Mary and helped the Tribe to a share of the CAA title and a playoff berth in 2022, but it has taken a minute for him and the Aggies to get their footing in 2023.

After three consecutive losses to start the season, while being outscored 92-25, North Carolina A&T found the win column last week on the road at Norfolk State, 28-26.

It may have been a nonconference contest, but it marked Brown’s first win as a head coach and the team’s first victory this year, and it should provide the Aggies with confidence and momentum heading into the Villanova game, where they’ll aim for their first CAA win.

North Carolina A&T (1-3, 0-1) was defeated by Elon 27-3 in its CAA debut Sept. 16.

Though North Carolina A&T is playing its first season in the CAA, the Aggies have the best overall record among current CAA teams over the last 10 seasons (2014-2023) at 72-25, and Villanova is second at 66-39.

This weekend’s meeting with Villanova will be the first in history between the two teams. North Carolina A&T previously played in the Big South Conference.

What To Know About Villanova Football

The Villanova offense may have stalled after halftime in last week’s loss to UAlbany, but that likely had something to do with a stellar Great Dane defense that entered the week tied for fifth nationally in sacks. Villanova quarterback Connor Watkins was sacked seven times last Saturday.

For the season, Watkins is 55-for-102 for 937 yards. He has thrown for five touchdowns and five interceptions.

Also in the loss, the Wildcats had four turnovers–two fumbles and two interceptions.

After the team’s win over Rhode Island on Sept. 23, senior linebacker Brendan Bell was named CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Week. He had eight tackles, including two tackles for a loss and a sack, while helping the Villanova defense hold the Rams to 241 yards of total offense.

Bell leads Villanova with 28 tackles this year and is one of six Wildcats with 20 or more for the season.

What To Know About North Carolina A&T Football

Graduate linebacker BJ Turner claimed a small piece of history this week when he was named the CAA’s Co-Defensive Player of the Week.

The recognition came after Turner made a career-high 19 tackles (nine unassisted) and broke up a pass in the 28-26 win over Norfolk State. It was the Aggies’ first victory of the season and also earned Turner the HBCU National Player of the Week accolade from BOXTOROW.

Turner leads the nation in solo tackles per game (nine) and is third in total tackles with 54. He has more than twice as many tackles as his closest teammate.

At just 13.25 points per game this season, the stats for the North Carolina A&T offense have room for improvement.

Redshirt sophomore Zach Yeager has completed 17-of-39 passes for 113 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions.

Redshirt sophomore running back Kenji Christian leads the rushers with 276 yards and two scores on 42 attempts, and he also leads the team in receptions with seven, good for 47 more yards.
