Elon Football Stuns W&M With 14-point 4th Quarter To Win 14-6

Elon beat William & Mary Football 14-6 to hand the Tribe their first loss of the year.

For the second year in a row, a fourth quarter scoring barrage powered Elon Football to an upset win over CAA powerhouse William & Mary.

The Phoenix (3-2 overall, 3-0 in CAA) scored all 14 of their points in the fourth quarter, much like in 2022 when they scored 15 to beat William & Mary in a come-from-behind 31-16 win. 

Also like 2022, the loss is the first for the Tribe (4-1, 2-1), ranked No. 4 in the latest FCS poll, on the season, which dropped to 4-1 on the year at Rhodes Stadium in Elon, N.C. on Saturday. 

Until the fourth quarter, the game was short on offense. William & Mary had a halftime lead of 6-0 thanks to a pair of field goals from Caden Bonoffski.

Before Chandler Brayboy caught the two biggest passes of the game, it was Elon's defense that starred on Saturday. The Phoenix defense forced two turnovers and had a key goal line stand in the first half that kept the Tribe out of the endzone. 

Once the fourth quarter came, Brayboy and quarterback Matthew Downing took over. Downing found Brayboy in the endzone for a 16-yard touchdown to give Elon a 7- fourth quarter lead. 

William & Mary couldn't answer, but did pin the Phoenix back to their own 6-yard line to start the next drive. 

It didn't matter.

Downing hit Brayboy for a 76-yard catch that put Elon near the redzone. A few plays later, Jamarien Dalton caught an 8-yard touchdown to put Elon up eight. 

The Tribe, playing without All-CAA senior running back Bronson Yoder went 53 yards yards on 10 -plays on the following drive and and reached the Elon 11-yard line. But the offense stalled and quarterback Darius Wilson was stopped on a fourth-and-3 conversion to seal the game for Elon. 

William & Mary's only regular season loss of 2022 was the loss to Elon.

Elon Defense Stop William & Mary on 4th-and-3 To secure win

The Phoenix stopped William & Mary quarterback Darius Wilson on a 4th-down run on the Elon 11-yard-line to secure a second-straight win over the Tribe. 

It's the No.4-ranked William & Mary team's first loss of the season.  

Elon Hits 76-yard Pass Against William & Mary Sets Up Touchdown

After taking the lead and forcing a punt, Elon hit the biggest play of the game with a 76-yard pass from Matthew Downing to Chandler Brayboy, who the previous drive connected for the touchdown.

The play was the longest of the game. 

Three plays later, Elon took a 13-6 lead on a Jamarien Dalton 8-yard touchdown catch from Downing.

Elon will begin the fourth quarter on the William & Mary 13 after a late third quarter interception by W&M. 

The Tribe lead 6-0 as Elon attempts to score the game's first touchdown. 

Darius Wilson Throws INT As Elon Football Takes Over

Elon's Sean McElwain picked off Darius Wilson to give the ball back to the Phoenix late in the third quarter. It was the second turnover of the quarter for William & Mary. It was the second turn over in as many drives and came after yet another William & Mary defensive stop.

The Tribe's redzone struggles continued after the offense fumbled on the Elon 16 in the third quarter. 

Elon Football Misses Kick; Trail 6-0 

Despite being on the Tribe's 6-yard line, Elon came away with no points on its second drive of the quarter. A taunting penalty in the redzone killed the Phoenix's momentum. Kicker Jack Berkowitz couldn't connect on a 39-yard field goal. 

Elon Fake Punt Fails, William & Mary Takes Over

Elon attempted a fake punt, but it backfired and the Tribe took over on the Elon 45.

Matthew Downing was sacked on second down that forced a 3rd-and-18. The Phoenix gained 11 yards on third down, but it wasn't enough. Elon punted for the second time today.

Elon Vs. William & Mary Football 2022: What Happened?

William & Mary jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, led by as many as 18 and built a 31-16 lead heading into the fourth. 

But Elon scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns to stun the Tribe in Williamsburg. 

Jalen Hampton finished with 152 yards rushing for Elon with three touchdowns. 

The loss proved to be costly for W&M. It was the only CAA loss they had and helped New Hampshire eventually claim a share of the league's title.

What's The Elon Vs. W&M Football All-Time Record?

The two schools first played in 2014 and the Tribe owns a 5-3 record against Elon. Oddly enough, William & Mary has fared better at Elon than at home, going 3-1 in North Carolina. 

In 2019, William & Mary outlasted Elon in the longest game in program history. The Tribe won in five overtimes. Owen Wright scored a 2-point conversion to seal the win. 

Meanwhile, the 2020 game was rescheduled to March 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The scheduling change allowed the Tribe to beat Elon twice that year, once in the spring and again in the fall.  


Elon Football Star Running Back Jalen Hampton Honored By CAA

While focus will be on the health of returning All-CAA running back Bronson Yoder, Elon’s running back is coming off one of the best games of the FCS season. 

Jalen Hampton rushed 33 times for 169 yards and four touchdowns against Campbell last week. 

He was named CAA Offensive Player of the Week. He scored all four touchdowns for Elon. 

His four touchdowns were an Elon FCS program record and were the most in a single game so far this season by one running back in all of FCS. 

Bronson Yoder Injury Update 

Star William & Mary running back Bronson Yoder, who has 4,323 career rushing yards, was injured in Week 4 against Maine with what coach Mike London called “an upper-body issue.” 

According to the Virginia Pilot, Yoder’s injury is possibly a season-ending one. London, however, said during his Monday press conference that Yoder would return at some point this season. 

London even left the possibility of Yoder playing against Elon open. 

Before the injury against Maine, Yoder had rushed for a career-high 163 yards. 

Yoder is listed as the starting running back on the team’s depth chart via the team’s athletic website.
