The Maine Black Bears will play the William & Mary Tribe in Week 4, and it will be the second Coastal Athletic Association game of the year for each. 

The conference rivals continue to be on opposite ends of the success spectrum, with William & Mary entering this week’s matchup up at 3-0 overall (1-0 in CAA), while Maine comes in at 0-3.

Their records are reflective of their performances in 2022, which saw the Tribe claim a share of the CAA title (with New Hampshire) and a playoff berth on the way to an 11-2 record, while Maine opened the year with four consecutive losses on the way to a 2-9 campaign.

So far this season, William & Mary has picked up wins against Campbell (34-24), Wofford (23-6) and Charleston Southern (15-7). Maine has fallen to Florida International (14-12), North Dakota State (44-7) and CAA foe Rhode Island (34-17).

William & Mary’s success in 2023 is due in part to a top-ranked defense that leads the nation in total defense at 187.7 yards per game. In the latest American Football Coaches Association FCS Coaches Poll, the Tribe are ranked No. 5, down a spot from the previous week, despite a victory.

Maine may not be ranked, but the Black Bears’ opponents have not been overlooked. FIU plays at the FBS level, while North Dakota State and Rhode Island both are ranked in the top 20 in the FCS poll.

This week’s meeting between Maine and William & Mary will be the 17th in history, and it will give one of the teams the opportunity to take the advantage in the series, as they’ve each won eight times.

Maine has won seven of the last nine games between the two teams, including a 27-16 victory the last time they met (October 2021). 

What To Know About University Of Maine Football

Freshman tailback Tristen Kenan has been a bright spot for the Maine offense. He opened the season with a 108-yard (rushing), one-touchdown performance against Florida International that earned him CAA Rookie of the Week honors.

Through three games, he has netted 243 rushing yards on a team-best 56 carries and scampered for three of the team’s four touchdowns. 

Senior quarterback Derek Robertson has thrown all but one of the Black Bears’ passes this season. He has connected on 60-of-103 attempts, but he has four interceptions and no touchdowns.  

Sophomore linebacker Darius McKenzie leads the Maine defense with 26 total tackles (17 solo and nine assists).

What To Know About William & Mary Football

William & Mary has won its last eight conference games and has found the win column in 10 consecutive regular-season games. The Tribe’s last loss in the regular season was on Sept. 24, 2022, falling to Elon (35-31).

Through three games in 2023, the Tribe offense is 16th in the country in rushing (217.7) and 24th in total offense (409.7).

Senior running back Bronson Yoder and junior RB Malachi Imoh have combined for 83 carries, netting 245 and 240 yards, respectively, plus a combined four rushing touchdowns. The team’s top receiver is junior JT Mayo, who has hauled in nine passes for 142 yards and a touchdown. 

Junior quarterback Darius Wilson has completed 42-of-78 passes. He has thrown for three touchdowns and one interception. 

William & Mary leads the country in total defense (187.7) and third-down defense (.133), is fourth in passing defense (112), fifth in scoring defense (12.3) and sixth in rushing defense (75.7). Five Tribe players have 15 or more total tackles in 2023, led by Marcus Barnes and Kevin Jarrell, with 19 apiece.

Saturday’s meeting between Maine and William & Mary could be a wet one. 

There is a 96 percent chance of rain, with showers early, clouds all day and heavy rain expected for the afternoon. The high temperature for the should be around 70 degrees, while the evening could see temps in the low 60s. The humidity will be between 94-98 percent from early to late, respectively.
