South Atlantic Conference Announces 2023 Baseball Awards

Newberry shortstop Braylin Marine was voted the 2023 South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Year, while Wingate left-handed pitcher Mitch Farris was named the SAC Pitcher of the Year.

In addition, Newberry’s Bennett Roemer was voted the SAC Freshman of the Year, and Newberry head coach Russell Triplett was named SAC Coach of the Year, the conference announced Thursday.

Marine, a senior from Freeport, New York, earns his second consecutive SAC Baseball Player of the Year accolade, after once again being one of the top offensive threats in the league.

He finished the regular season as the league leader in batting average (.446) and on-base percentage (.526).

He is ranked second in the conference in runs scored (64) and stolen bases (37) and is third in RBIs (59) and triples (3).

In addition to being named the SAC Player of the Year, Marine was a first-team All-SAC selection at shortstop.

Farris, a junior from Palm Harbor, Florida, has been one of the top pitchers in the SAC and the nation this season.

He leads the SAC in ERA (1.35), wins (10), strikeouts (118), strikeouts per nine innings (13.28) and innings pitched (80).

Farris also is the national leader in strikeouts, while ranking second in wins and third in ERA.

In addition to being named SAC Pitcher of the Year, Farris also was a first-team All-SAC starting pitcher and was named to the SAC All-Defense team as a pitcher.

Roemer, a freshman right-hander from Bluffton, South Carolina, posted some very impressive numbers on the mound in his collegiate debut, earning a 7-0 record, while allowing just 50 hits and 24 runs. He had 61 strikeouts in 55 1/3 innings of work.

His 3.09 ERA is the third-best in the SAC this season.

In addition to being named SAC Freshman of the Year, Roemer was named a first-team All-SAC starting pitcher.

Triplett earns his third SAC Coach of the Year honor, this time leading his team to a second SAC Baseball regular-season title.

Under his guidance, the Wolves are ranked No. 10 nationally with a 36-9 overall record. They are 19-4 in league play.

The Wolves lead the SAC in three statistical categories: batting average (.329), on-base percentage (.428) and stolen bases per game (3.13).

Joining Marine, Farris and Roemer on the All-SAC first team were outfielders Blake Bean and Wade Cuda from Lenoir-Rhyne and Newberry’s Donovan Ford.

Lenoir-Rhyne’s Tyler McPeak was named the first-team first baseman, Lenoir-Rhyne’s Cole Laskowski was named the second baseman and Wingate’s Seaver King was named third baseman.

Newberry backstop Rhett Jolly was named first-team catcher, and Lenoir-Rhyne’s Sal Carricato was named the first-team designated hitter.

Rounding out the first team were Catawba starting pitcher Austin Fine, and Catawba reliever Robbie Cowie.

The SAC baseball awards will be presented between opening-round games at the 2023 SAC Baseball Championship at Newberry and Wingate.
