Remember that time when Mason Fine passed for approximately a million yards -- on the way to becoming the only player to be named Oklahoma's Gatorade Player of the Year twice -- and still no one wanted him?

If not for Seth Littrell being hired as North Texas' head coach -- and Locust Grove (OK) head coach Matt Hennesy lobbying Littrell to take a good, hard look at Fine and Littrell's willingness to watch practically every throw Fine has ever made -- the top quarterback in Conference USA would instead be an unknown walk-on running the scout team at Oklahoma State this season.

Unfortunately for the rest of the conference, that perfect sequence of events did happen and Fine is not unknown -- nor is he at Oklahoma State. The 5-foot-11 sophomore quarterback is, instead, helping to lead one of the biggest turnarounds in the country at UNT (4-2), where he leads the C-USA in passing yards (1,796), touchdowns (14), and passing yards per game (299) through six games this season.

Against UTSA on Saturday, Fine passed for 354 yards and three touchdowns with one interception to lead the Mean Green to a thrilling 29-26 home win in Denton, Texas. On the game-winning drive, Fine was 5 of 6 for 98 yards -- marching North Texas the length of the field with about a minute left and no timeouts.

On Monday, Fine was recognized for his heroic efforts with a boatload of awards, including as the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, one of the Davey O'Brien Award's "Great Eight" for week seven, and one of the Manning Award's "Stars of the Week."
