Grayson Imposes Its Will Late In Victory Over John Curtis
Fourth-ranked Grayson (GA) got all it wanted from John Curtis Christian (LA) for three quarters on Saturday, before dominating down the stretch to secure another high-profile victory -- this one a 22-9 triumph over Louisiana's No. 1 team at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, LA.
The first half was a defensive slugfest that saw the two teams trade only field goals. The Rams (3-0) got on the board first with a 39-yarder from Will van Pamelan to begin the second quarter. The Patriots (1-1) responded with a 32-yarder from Brock Wunstell roughly seven minutes later, sending the teams to the locker room tied 3-3.
John Curtis drew first blood in the second half with an outstanding 11-play, 65-yard drive that was capped by a 1-yard plunge by quarterback Collin Guggenheim. The extra point failed and the Patriots led 9-3 with 6:59 to play in the third quarter.
From that point forward, however, it was all Grayson.
On the ensuing possession, the Rams marched 80 yards on nine plays, ultimately knotting the game back up at 9-9 on a 2-yard touchdown run by DJ Irons.
One possession later, another devastating drive -- this one spanning 13 plays, 61 yards and over five minutes of clock -- put Grayson back in front when Irons found pay dirt once more on a 1-yard keeper.
After a failed fake punt attempt by John Curtis set Grayson up on the plus-28, Irons and the offense wasted little time landing the knockout blow. On the second play of the possession, Irons found Mahari Stribling with a 20-yard touchdown toss to make it 19 unanswered points for head coach Christian Hunnicutt's team.
The Rams totaled 234 rushing yards on 44 carries. Ronald Thompkins and Jonathan Halyard combined for 145 yards on 23 carries.
Irons, who had just 65 total yards at halftime, carried the Grayson offense down the stretch, finishing with a team-leading 91 rushing yards, 126 passing yards, and all three second-half touchdowns to his credit.
