Patrick Surtain Jr. Is The Best Cornerback In A Generation
Patrick Surtain Jr. is the best cornerback prospect ever. Here's a collection of the Plantation (FL) American Heritage senior's top plays.
Patrick Surtain Jr., the son of a former NFL All-Pro cornerback, plays the same position -- and plays it very well. So well, in fact, that the younger Surtain, who has a 0.9989 247Sports composite player rating, is set to become the highest-rated cornerback prospect of all time -- as in ever, in the history of internet and recruiting rankings.
As for what makes the Plantation (FL) American Heritage senior so good? Let's allow the GIFs to do the talking.
From youth football on, defensive backs are taught to high-point the football. But no cornerback prospect in the country attacks the ball like Surtain.
The ball has a way of finding Surtain -- or vice versa -- which is A) something that cannot be taught and B) very bad news for the opposition.
Surtain is not the wide receiver on this play, but you wouldn't know it. When the ball goes up, it belongs to him. He has wide receiver ball skills and pursues possession with rare conviction.
In the return game, Surtain is special. On repeated occasions, he has demonstrated excellent vision, elusiveness and, of course, speed -- all of which figures to translate at the next level.
Again, the football belongs to Surtain -- not the receiver, not the ball carrier. His willingness to attack -- and the precision with which he does so -- is extremely, extremely rare.
Lastly, Surtain is not afraid to bring the hat. He plays with the physicality of a safety. He runs, covers, creates turnovers, makes plays in the return game, and tackles well. There's not another box to check -- that's the definition of a complete cornerback and a player who will excel from day one at the next level.
